change bluetooth keyboard type on mac from JIS to ANSI

This question was posted a while ago, but no one answered it well. Heres the answer and the question reposted. I needed this when I had a problem connecting my logitech bluetooth keyboard k400 to my macbook pro.

1 - go to keyboard in system preferences

2 - click change keyboard type on the bottom left

3 - after clicking continue it won't be able to identify your keyboard so it will prompt you to manually select the type

4 - select ANSI, it thinks your keyboard is JIS.

you should then be all set!

The answer

External Apple Bluetooth Keyboard inputs wrong characters on iPad Pro

I have been using my external keyboard with my iPad Pro 12.9in for several months now. I sat down to do some work about 15 minutes ago, and some of the keys are messed up.

Eg:

  • pressing ' gives :
  • pressing @ gives "

After doing some research, I have found out that my ipad thinks my keyboard is JIS instead of ANSI.

This seems like it was a problem on macs back in 2009. Everything I found seems to point back to this webpage: http://m10lmac.blogspot.com/2009/12/fixing-keyboard-type-problems.html

I tried:

  • disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard
  • "forgetting" the keyboard and reconnecting
  • restarting the keyboard
  • changing to US International and back to US in keyboard settings
  • restarting the iPad

I am at a loss as to next steps. Any help would be great.
