How to convert a .txt file to .srt file using TextEdit

Hi everyone!

So, my issue is that I used to use TextEdit to create .srt files for videos. I was using Seirra at the time. Now, I've updated to Mojave and I can't seem to find a way to convert my .txt files to .srt. I've tried renaming them in the finder window as well as in the info window. Any one else experiencing this?

You get that Exec black and green icon because the operating system sees no default application capable of opening the .srt file extension. It is still a plain text file, just with a different party mask for an icon. If it makes you feel better, right-click on that .srt file, and press option+command+i. In that Get Info window, change the Open With setting to TextEdit, and click through the Change All… button. Now, the operating system knows that TextEdit is the default application, and the icon has a normal text appearance.

If you open TextEdit and it provides a toolbar with font settings, ruler, etc, then you do not have a plain text file, it is Rich Text and won't work for subtitles. You must ensure that upon opening the TextEdit document that you make it Plain Text from the Format menu, and the only thing left will be the document title bar. Now, enter your time code and sub-title text. When you attempt to save it, it will default to a .txt extension. Change that to .srt and save.
