I am a coder, and I wanted to use TextEdit to edit my code, but every time I need to change the format (for example changing name.txt to newname.json, newname.py, etc.), it always adds a .txt at the end, which annoys me. I went into the preferences and help pages and cannot find a solution. How do I change the file format?

Duplicate the file and move it to a new folder.
Single click on the file name and change it so as not to mix it up with the original.
Now highlight it again and edit the extension to whatever. Finder should ask do you want to append .txt to the new name. Click no.

On the New Document tab, you should also set it to plain text instead of RTF.
And, you should download a good text editor like BBEdit, SubEthaEdit, Sublime…
Try to use the save as option when ur ready to save. Just hold down the option key while you click on file and the save as option should show up. You then have option for different formats.
It works for everyone else.
If there is no real solution, just tell me that there is no way to solve this

You can also search for an app in app store that can convert to different format.
