VPN Server using WireGuard?

Now that WireGuard has released a GUI app for the Mac, has anyone tried using it to set up a VPN? I was happily using my 2012 Mac Mini for a home server and VPN while travelling, but Apple has removed that capability with Server. Looking for any tips and tricks for using WireGuard for the VPN portion of that. I use FreeDNS to maintain a static IP address.

Thanks-Ricka

A couple of things:

  1. As you already know, Apple removed a number of features from the Apple Server software suite, including VPN. They are "recommending" OpenVPN, SoftEther VPN, & WireGuard. Ref: Prepare for changes to macOS Server 5.7.1 - Apple Support
  2. Per WireGuard, their VPN app is "currently under development." Installation, setup, and use should be directed to their website to address any questions related to this product. However, from what I have read, it shouldn't be much different from using OpenVPN. Ref: WireGuard Installation & WireGuard Quick Start

I've had good success with firewalls with embedded VPN servers. The iOS or macOS L2TP/IPSec client into an L2TP/IPSec VPN server in the firewall, and off you go. Works like you're connected to the target network. The firewall-embedded VPN server also avoids dealing with NAT VPN pass-through, too. And the firewall VPN server usually works when the internal target box with a host-based VPN server is offline for whatever reason.

The ZyXEL ZYWALL USG series works, though the UI definitely assumes knowledge of networking and VPN terms and concepts.

There are other firewalls with embedded VPN servers.

And as Tesserax stated, WireGuard states they're not quite ready yet.
