ipod touch suddenly wants to go thru setup again and is stuck on activation lock

I am suddenly unable to open my ipod touch. It wants to complete "setup" but has an activation lock on it. I have owned and used this ipod for years, why suddenly is it confused? I didn't remember my password, so I reset it online and now my ipod keeps telling me that it is incorrect. I can't get past this screen. HELP!!!

iPod Touch (4th Gen)

Hello confused911always,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. I understand that your iPod is under activation lock after a few years and you cannot turn it off because you have forgotten your Apple ID password. There are a number of different actions with your iPod that could trigger the Activation Lock. One possibility is restoring or resetting the iPod, but there are other options.

First, let's make sure you have the correct information in front of you to turn off the Activation Lock on your iPod. Take a look at the following support article:

Turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support

To remove Activation Lock, you will need your Apple ID and password, the following support article will provide you the information you need to recover access to your Apple ID by resetting your password:

Best regards.
