What does "Run First Aid from Recovery" mean? (Disk Utility)

Running Disk Utility's 'First Aid' on my internal HD reported:

"First Aid found corruption that needs to be repaired. To repair the startup volume, run First Aid from Recovery. Click Done to continue."

Can someone explain what "from Recovery" means?

Thanks.

Yes, on supported hardware and your system is supported. If there is no ethernet cable connection to the Internet, it should prompt you to connect to the WiFi. Then you should see it begin to boot into Recovery Mode across the internet. Keep in mind it will take some time to boot this way. It will present the same interface as a local Recovery Mode. The key combination listed here will determine which OS is booted.

Ref: Recovery HD

Apple used to call macOS Recovery as Recovery HD in some instances.

Quoting from below linked article.

“Note: In order to create an external OS X  Recovery using the OS X Recovery Assistant,

the Mac must have an existing Recovery HD.”

“To access OS X Recovery, reboot the computer while holding the Option key.

Select Recovery HD from the Startup Manager.”

How would you be able to use the (external) Internet Recovery Mode if you couldn't first boot your computer?

Apple updates the system firmware with OSX 10.12.4+ so it is possible for a system to boot into Internet Recovery Mode. If the system cannot find the hidden Recovery Partition it will attempt to boot from the internet. You can also force it to boot from the internet using the key combinations here.

Thanks!

I wonder why they couldn't just add "HD' ("run First Aid from Recovery HD").

Because there are two types of Recovery Mode. One can boot from the Recovery partition on the drive and the other one is an Internet Recovery Mode which boots macOS from the Internet on systems running 10.12.4+. Also newer systems no longer use hard drives and it would be misleading.

Thanks, I didn't know about that.

Is it what dominic23 refers to below as "external OS X  Recovery"?

Thanks. Do you mean it does that automatically?

The support doc mentions needing an Internet connection but nothing else about the process occurring via the Internet when the local Recovery HD isn't available.
