I've connected my Canon video camera via DV connector/Firewire400 to FW800 adapter/Apple FW800 to Thunderbolt connector to my 2014 iMac. FCPX sees the camera (Canon Optura300) and begins importing, BUT after anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes the process stops. The same thing happens with iMovie. So basically the system works except for the stopping. Ideas?

Sounds like Time Code breaks to me as well.
One workaround is to use another DV deck to record the existing tape in one session.
This creates a tape with contiguous TC.
As Tom mentioned, QuickTime X can Capture and is more forging when TC breaks are encountered.

The Canon site says IEEE1394 which is FW400. Other FW400 devices connected will interfere with the system. Connect the camera. In the QT player use File>Make New Movie Recording. There’s a small popup triangle that allows you select any connected device.
Breaks in the timecode? Try capturing with the QuickTime player.
It will be an iLink/Firewire/IEE1394a, all mean the same thing in the DV camera world.
A four pin connector on the camera end and probably the firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to your iMac.
I'm wondering if there is any tape damage causing "drop outs" even between shot takes.
That is a possible cause.

I wonder if this is related to FW100. As I recall, this camcorder used FW100 and when plugged into my old PowerMac it would not function if any FW 400 devices were also connected.
Sounds interesting, but how can QT capture video that is on tape in my camcorder? The only programs that recognize this camcorder are FCPX and iMovie. QT doesn't acknowledge the camcorder.
I don't have a second DV deck. Also, the breaks occur in the middle of a single clip, so time breaks seem less likely.
