Movies Anywhere - no 4K or Dolby Vision?
Okay, here’s the scenario. Take a movie like 2001: A Space Odyssey, a movie that Apple offers via iTunes in 4K and Dolby Vision HDR; this is the movie I will use as an example. I own this movie on Blu Ray. I used Vudu’s disc to digital program to get access to the digital 1080p Vudu copy of this movie. I have both my Vudu and apple iTunes movies account linked together with Movies Anywhere, meaning that with qualifying movies, a movie bought with one service shows up as bought in the other service. 2001 qualifies, so now I see it available to watch in my iTunes movie account, both on my iPhone XS Max and my Apple TV 4K. However, this movie does NOT have the usual badges in the info screen indicating that it is available in 4K or Dolby Vision. Additionally, there is no way indicated to pay to upgrade this film to get access to the 4K / Dolby Vision version. I contacted support, which indicates that even though you don’t see the badges, you do get the 4K / Vision content.
Has anyone with a similar film accessed through similar means had a chance to test this? I don’t have a 4K TV or I’d check the output. I do have a device that will play Dolby Vision HDR content (XS Max), but no way to know whether a content feed is actually using Vision or not as there is no indicator on the screen. If someone had a 4K TV or device and can verify that movies that should be 4K play as 4K even though they don’t indicate they are 4K in the movie info screen, that’d be useful info. Because if using Movies Anywhere locks you into a 1080p maximum copy of the film with no way to purchase an upgrade, that kinda stinks.
I’ve attached screenshots to show what I mean - both 2001 and Interstellar *should* show 4K and Dolby Vision, but only interstellar (which was redeemed in iTunes with a code) indicates these are available.
