Do I need to get the pack of pencil tips for the pencil to work?

Apple are your source for replacement tips for the Apple Pencil. The official spare tips fit both the first and second generation Apple Pencil.

Both versions are supplied with a tip fitted out of the box - and the first gen Pencil comes with one spare tip supplied in the box. You do NOT need to order any spares to use a brand-new (boxed) pencil - but having some spares available will ensure that you have one available for when you need eventually to replace it.
