FCPX. i want to assign a number of audio roles, but when I go to do this I'm unable to: the roles are greyed out. The only thing I notice that might be indicator of why this is so ... would be the little icon in the upper left hand corner of the audio clip? The clips I can assign audio roles don't seem to have this little icon. Not sure what the icon means.
It looks like you’re either inside a clip or inside a compound clip. The icon on the upper left corner or some of the clips is the compound clip symbol. You can’t assign audio roles to compounds. You assign them to the audio clips inside the compound. If you have multiple audio roles inside the compound the role color will be gray and you’ll get a special icon.

Thank you Tom, bang on you are. I had created a number of 'transition' clips ... that were in fact compound clips. So I went into the compound clip and was able to assign the various parts to an audio role, then came out and everything was hunky dory.
