"Your connection is not private" error on google chrome--but only with ethernet connection (new macbook pro)

I just set up a brand new macbook pro out of the box, and I've discovered that if I connect to the internet via wifi everything works fine--but if I connect via an Anker USB-C to ethernet adapter, I get "Your connection is not private" error messages for every website I try to access through Google Chrome. The ethernet connection works just fine when plugged directly into my old macbook pro. All software is up to date.


I don't know if I've configured something incorrectly on the new macbook, or if it's a faulty adapter (although then I'd expect it just not to show a connection, right?).


Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. I understand you're receiving an alert about your connection when you use an ethernet adapter.


Do you get the same or similar alerts when you use the adapter with the built-in Safari app? Knowing this would be a quick way to help narrow things down a bit.


Testing this in a temporary administrator account would be a great idea as well. This would tell you if the issue is system-wide or user account-specific, which may help to identify a solution. Here are the steps you'll need: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac


Once you create the temporary user account, click Apple menu () > Log Out, and then log into the test user. Then, test the adapter with both Chrome and Safari to see how it works. The link above has some great additional steps you can try once you have the testing results.
