Network problems as soon as I updated to 10.15.6

As soon as I updated my 2019 Macbook Pro 15in to OSX 10.15.6 I am unable to access the internet in ANY APP (Any browsers, maps, app store, discord, and the like) outside of Safe Mode, which is why I am able to write this post, I booted my mac into Safe Mode. Offline apps work fine.

I might add for some bazaar reason chrome lets me watch YouTube videos and even search Google (I can't click results though), but every other site gives me the "[Website] unexpectedly closed the connection (ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED" with Safari giving me a similar error Safari can't establish a secure connection."

When I attempted to access the update screen in system preferences it said "SSL Error"

Is there something wrong with my certificates?

I tried resetting my network settings, disabling log in items, rebooting my mac, checking activity monitor for anything weird, and searching the internet. Nothing has helped. This was not a problem until I updated to 10.15.6. They said in the patch notes that they added some security fixes, could this have something to do with it?

My router is fine, I have a stable, fast internet connection.

I did see something popup upon updating my mac. It said something like "Legacy extension from PACEAP" which I googled and it is a virus protection service; however, I do not recall installing any thing of that sort. Malware?

Also, why does safe mode work and not the normal booting?

Please help.

Thanks,

Gabe

Did your MacBook start with Catalina? (Seems like it should have, being 2019.)

I'm simply wondering whether the "Legacy extension" could be pre-Catalina.

I also wonder whether the "Legacy extension" may have come with Google Chrome, or was added for Chrome.

Likewise, that "SSL Error" is especially likely to be tied to the issue: without a properly working Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), you will be, essentially, unable to "establish a secure connection."

Have you tried to perform a "recovery" of your system?

The fact that things work in "safe node", but not with "the normal booting", indicates that the problem is something that was added, at some time. (It can, also, be caused by missing or corrupt components, that are, temporarily, replaced by "known good" ones, by "safe mode".)

Hello,

Update, I found the virus protection software and it had nothing to do with the problem. It was deleted along with any other hidden log in items.

YouTube and google are still the only things that works. I do not have a backup of the files in this computer; however, I could backup only certain things and attempt to restore from there. I would rather not do this and just figure out what the problem is if that is what you mean by a recovery.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Gabe

Hello again,

Figured it out, it was nothing we mentioned. It was an accountability software me and my family share called Covenant Eyes. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it fixed the problem. Guess the program needed a clean install.

Thanks anyways for your help,

Gabe

I see the following potential issues, Bradford Bosley, from your EtreCheck report:

Minor Issues:
These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems or opportunities for improvement.
More than one antivirus app - This machine has multiple antivirus apps installed.
Heavy RAM usage - Apps are using a large amount of RAM.
Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.
Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed. Apple has said that unsigned software will not run by default in a future version of the operating system.
System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the backgroud. Low performance - EtreCheck report took an unusually long time to run.
32-bit Apps - This machine has 32-bits apps will not work on current versions of the operating system. Kernel extensions present - This machine has kernel extensions that may not work in the future. Sharing enabled - This machine has sharing services enabled that could be a security risk.

Additionally, we have the following, which may be an issue:

Antivirus software: Apple, Avast, and Malwarebytes

"Malwarebytes" in a known culprit with many issues.

I have seen issues reported for "Avast", recently, as well.

There may be additional issues hiding in the "unsigned software", "system modifications", and/or "kernel extensions".
