Problems with AirPlay

I've been having problems with Airplay on my AppleTV 4. These aren't new issues:

  1. static-like noise and dropouts with while playing audio via Spotify (Mac desktop app)
  2. Airplay connection dropping while playing video via Safari (iOS/iPhone 10XS)

I've been told that AirPlay works only as well as the WiFi network it's on. However, I don't have any problems with my WIFi.

Anyone have a suggestion? Is there any chance it's an issue with the AppleTV, or settings? Or should my focus be on the WiFi router?

Thanks in advance

It would be streaming from your device over the local network to the router and then being sent to the Apple TV. Placement is a factor for both and neither should be obscured.

Running the diagnostic would give the best picture, to see how stable the network is at the current time.

Of note with choosing bands bands for the router. 2.4ghz has great range but is prone to interference as most devices run on that frequency. Along with placement, other factors can include how many wireless devices are in the area as well as other appliances running on the frequency including Bluetooth, microwaves, cordless phones etc. 5ghz won’t have that issue but has considerably less range.

You can also try changing channels on the router. Make sure it’s up to date. The age of it can also be a factor.

Yes it could be your wifi network. Working fine on everything else doesn’t eliminate it not doing so on another device.

troubleshoot your network.

Make sure the cables and cords are secured tightly,

the modem is not obscured by anything or down low on the floor etc.

Unplug it for one minute so it can reset.

If it persists, some, if not most, wifi modems run on Duel bands and removing one and making only one the default can help considerably.

you could also restart your Apple TV or unplug for a minute.

make sure you are on the same network on Apple TV and the device you are using.

Thanks for that. It does look ok so far. However, I notice that it is set on the 5Ghz frequency, which has pretty limited range. Try switching it to 2.4Ghz. Also try changing channels on your router. (refer to your router manual if unsure on how to do this)

Lastly, and before testing hardware, I would take it to another location to verify if the issue persists on another network.

I have tested myself using a much older Mac and cannot replicate and know others who can also attest to that as well, so it wouldn't simply be an issue of the hardware, if anything it could be a defect that has come upon your particular laptop.

Yes and Spotify and safari servers can be problematic as well.

From whatever device you are using I’d delete the internet cache. It’s a good rule of thumb to do this on a regular bash’s, it will sign you out of everything though. All that clutter it accumulates slows loading times.

Restart all devices including ATV.

reset network settings.

If possible delete the Spotify app and reinstall.

good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I'll try all of this. One thing to note is that my Apple TV is connected to my modem via Ethernet.

Question about the modem/router location - when a device is streaming to the Apple TV via Airplay, isn't it communicating directly to the Apple TV? So wouldn't the issue be with the Apple TV not be obscured, as opposed to the modem/router?

I have an interesting update. My cable company replaced my modem and wireless router which I decided would be my first troubleshooting step. What I'm now seeing is that the dropout (and "static-like") issues ONLY happen when using Airplay from my MacbookPro (2015 model) to the Apple TV4, but NOT when streaming from my iPhone XS.

So I have to wonder ... could it be the older wifi hardware in the laptop that's the issue? What else can I test to figure out what might be causing this, now that it seems to be proven that the wifi network is ok (based on the fact that there are no dropouts when using the iPhone to stream content)?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I realize it's not definitive proof, but I streamed from the iPhone for probably 5 or 6 hours without any dropouts or other issues, immediately following problematic streaming from the laptop .... so I'd say there's a pretty good chance it's not the network health. That said, at your suggestion, I ran diagnostics using iStumbler, however I have no idea how to interpret the results, aside from the obvious - that the signal appears to be strong. Here's a screenshot of the results - do you see anything that's an issue?

I'm guessing that if you don't see anything with the wireless network then my next step would be to have the wifi card/antenna tested out via hardware diagnostics. Would you agree?

Thanks

Yes, it’s dual band. If I disabled one it would have to be the 5g because my Kindle only works on 2g.

So many possible variables ... this is a real pain. I discovered something else. The iphone streams without issues when it’s via an app (youtube, spotify), but when it’s via screen mirroring Safari I get dropouts - where the connection is completely lost with the Apple TV
