iPHONE's contacts

I bought this new iPHONE XS MAX in November. Having never had a smart phone before, after 4 lessons in the Apple stores, I still haven't used it, except to try to photograph pics and videos on it.

Since my family died I have been switching from London to New York, so what I wanted from this phone, was:

1) to use one mobile, instead of having a flip phone, here and another flip phone there, each with respective contacts in the US and the UK.

2) to be able to photograph and video and get it onto my Macbook Pro, now in El Capitan.

3) to be able to show show videos and photos on the iPhone that are on my laptop. --Kind of like on  an iPad.

4) to be able to talk into the iPhone and the get it typed onto my laptop, as the OCR on the iphone is better than on my 2012 Mac.

5) I do not want to sync my 1000 GB macBook pro hard drive with my 256 GB hard drive on my iPhone!  In fixing my Calender the Apple tech introduced my to iCloud, that I really didn't want to use too much, as my digital life is complicated enough. And I certainly do NOT wish my 65,000 emails on my icloud and phone.  . . . .  So in fixing my Calander after upgrading from Mountain Lion, all my Many Many contacts are on my phone and on iCloud.

PS: I do not want to scroll for ever, as all my notes in my contact book are now on iCloud and iPhone. I only want NAMES with their PHONE NUMBERS on my iPhone and in my iCloud.

All this to say, HOW DO I ONLY HAVE NAMES AND PHONE NUMBERS ON ICLOUD????

I took my Contacts out of iCloud and the suddenly I had no Contacts on my Computer. So of course I reinstall the contacts on iCloud. I really don't want all the info I have on my Mac in Contacts on my iPhone. I rather then put all my contacts in one by one.  ..

But how do I then not loose ALL the INFO on my Laptop in Contacts. (Ir is just so convenient to have notes and important quickly accessible info in my Contacts.

---ANY SUGGESTIONS would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Prima

You need to understand this clearly that there are no Contacts on iPhone unlike Mac.

The contacts that are shown in iPhone are basically either on iCloud or any other email account.

As you have said you have many many contacts and you want only Name and Phone number fields. Do the following please

  1. Export iCloud contacts in .vcf format
  2. Use any vcf to csv converter and convert the entire list*
  3. Open them in an excel sheet, delete all other columns except Name and Phone No.
  4. Save it as .csv
  5. Import to Mac from this CSV file
  6. Export as .vcf
  7. Import .vcf to iCloud (Web Based)
  8. Sync with iPhone

*Make sure fields are separated by a tab (in a tab-delimited file) or a comma (in a CSV file), instead of another character. Don’t include spaces before or after the tabs or commas.

Dear Madhu,

thanks for your quick answer.

I am rather scared that I may lose all my contacts with my many personal notes, that has been started in 2002. ..... As when I turned off iCloud, as I said all the contacts on my Mac vanished! (It's just so useful to have personal notes next to names in CONTACTS on my laptop.)

So, presumablyI would then turn off the CONTACTS in iCLOUD? And later add manually any new phone number and name onto my iPhone? . . . Is this all correct??

. .. .What is a .vcf format. And what is a .csv format? I am sorry but I am a neophyte with web and iCloud etc.

Thanks again,

Prima
