Why computer name changed by ?

Yesterday got a popup that my former computer name michel-imac was in use and the name will be changed to michel-imac(2). Sharing now shows that name. No sharing service is on. Time Machine backups now reference that name. This is the only computer on the router. The router shows the computer attached by its former name

I found one post from 2009 noting this with the solution simply being to change it back.

Just got a popup on my usual user and admin user stating a mail account added. That account name is from my ISP, but is only used on a different user ID.

I am suspicious and cannot explain what happened earlier. Otherwise system appears to be OK.

Is this wireless connection or ethernet?

I would not be concerned, not an issue beyond your aesthetic sensibilities.

You can from >System Preferences>Network>Advanced>TCP/IP> Renew DHCP lease

I suspect this is all it will take. You can reboot the computer, you can reboot the router/modem

On the Mac, the place you’ll change that setting is within System Preferences > Sharing.

At the top of that pane, there’s a box for you to type in.
