This question periodically pops up and several countries offer this. The link I posted indicates France is one of them (and England I know, and Japan). However, it requires the participation of the store, not simply producing a receipt at at a kiosk at the airport. I don't know that Apple offers this, and there isn't any indication on Apple's web site of this. It may well require somebody to walk into an Apple Store in Paris and ask. I would think if they did offer this then it would be better advertised, so I suspect they don't for the reasons I gave in a previous post.

fdemgm: Realize that if you are buying an iPhone or iPad that there is no effective international warranty on those devices. If something goes wrong then you will have to carry the devices back to a store in Europe to get them repaired. You may well also have to pay import taxes when returning to your home country so it may not be worth it.

When I travel abroad and buy something I ask the store for the tax break. The store does not always provide the break so when I return I submit a form to my government tax department. Whether or not I get the credit depends on the governments involved or the voluntary participation of the store. If the government of destination has an import duty on the product then the buyer will owe taxes rather than get a break. This is all beyond the store's responsibility.

In what country do you live?

In the USA you pay duty on anything over $800 (the US government web site mentions 3 levels but makes it impossible to find a list of which levels apply to which countries, but usually I see $800 on questionnaires when I return to the USA). It doesn't matter how much or how little sales tax you paid to other countries.

My state charges "use tax" on any purchases totaling over $730 per year made from other countries (keeping it simple here). If you go over that then you pay tax on the entire amount of any an all purchases made from outside this state. I won't go into local details but there is no credit given for sales tax paid in other countries.

So if I were to buy a $900 iPhone in the UK I would owe what I believe is 10% on the residual $900-$800 = $100 x 10% = $10 to US customs. I would then owe $900 x 7.5% = $67 to the state where I live.

What is clear is nobody here is going to give you a break on taxes paid to another government. My state gives you a break if you buy elsewhere in the USA (the amount dependent upon how much you paid to the other state) but not if outside the USA.

The other component is the country of purchase and the store there. When I was in the UK 30 years I bought some china in London. The store charged me the full amount but gave me a special receipt. At the airport I took the form to a kiosk and they made me show them the china, then they gave me a check (minus a service fee I believe) for the taxes I had paid. In Japan we told the stores we lived in the USA, showed them out passports, then they charged us the amount with no tax. In Japan you can only do this for a certain total value of goods. In both countries only special stores could do this and in many countries you can only do it for a minimum purchase from that store (usually hundreds of $).
