Increase RAM

I'd like to increase the RAM in my MacBook Pro 9.2 - it currently has 4 GB. First, can I increase to 8 GB and secondly, will it increase the performance. This laptop has always been very slow ever since it was purchased and I am just now able to spend the time trying to figure out the issue.
