Upgrade MacBook 5,1 RAM

I find my MacBook 5,1 (Aluminum Unibody, Late 2008) slow when doing some tasks. On Apple Support:

Applicable model

MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)

Memory specifications

This MacBook model has these memory specifications:

Number of memory slots: 2

Base memory: 2 GB (but also configured to order)

Maximum memory: 4 GB

Memory card specifications- Double Data Rate Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module (DDR SO-DIMM) format

- 30mm

- 1 GB or 2 GB

- 204-pin

- PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz Type RAM

Additional notes: For best performance, don't mix sizes; always install two identical memory modules (a pair of 1 GB, 2 GB, or 4 GB memory modules).

Can I upgrade this MacBook's RAM to DDR3 - 4GB - Bus 1066Mhz - PC3 - 8500S? Is it compatible?

The difference between those are the "S" in PC3 - 8500S and PC3 - 8500.

Thank you

MacBook, macOS 10.14

Not sure why one set (or chip) RAM has an 'S' as part of its number.

The memory chip upgrade can be two 4-GB chips; later replacement

upgrade RAM improved after Apple specs were released; not updated.

from http://mactracker.ca (database specification application)

• Built-in Memory None

Maximum Memory 8.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)

Memory Slots 2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

for MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) per same source:

Introduced October 2008

Discontinued June 2009

Model Identifier MacBook5,1

Model Number A1278

EMC 2254

Order Number MB466LL/A (2.0 GHz), or MB467LL/A (2.4 GHz)

I'd look into crucial.com -&/or- see owc page 'my upgrades' for exact part match

for your build model year. The 'S' may not matter; IF its 'quality & tested' to be

adequate for your exact computer model. OWC offers a page to enter product

info and see upgrade matches. ~ You need not enter any other information but

toggle the lists to see your product, only.
