Extract Images From Mac Numbers

Seems to be no easy way to copy a single image from a cell out of Numbers. Looking at older threads, this is an issue since 2014. Amazing how many ancient problems still exist in Apple software. Why can't I just copy and paste the image??

If you want to access the image files that Numbers uses to display as background in cells then you can do this:

In your menu at File > Advanced> Change File Type choose Package.

Then locate the Numbers file in Finder and right-click or option-click and choose Show Package Contents. Look in the Data folder that appears for .jpg or other image formats.

Hi Jesse,

For the same reason you cannot copy and paste the block of colour in a cell to anything but another cell (which you can also do with an image in a cell). The image and the block of colour are 'format', not content. An image can be pasted into a cell only as 'image fill'.

You can enlarge the cell to the size of the image you want, then take a screen shot of that image, sending the copy to the clipboard, then paste that copy to any location that you would paste 'content'. To take a screen shot of part of the screen:

  • Place the pointer at the top left corner of the area you want to capture.
  • Press shift-(option)-command-4

The pointer will change from an arrow to a crosshair

  • Drag down and right to the lower right corner of what you want to capture.
  • Release the mouse button to capture the shot.

The selected area will be captured as a .png image and

    • copied to the clipboard if you included the option key in the keystroke combination OR
    • saved to your Desktop if you omitted option from the keystroke combination.

The file will be named 'Screen shot" followed by the date and time when it was captured.

Store a copy of the image in an online location. Put a link to the image in the cell. Click the link to open the online image in a browser.

Or put the image's file name in the cell or an adjacent cell and try a Spotlight search on the file name. You may need to store a copy in a location other than the one described in SGIII's post, depending whether Spotlight searches have access to that location.

Or Copy the format of the cell (select cell, press option-command-C ) and paste that format (option-command-V ) into a larger 'display' cell in a separate table dedicated to this purpose, as done below:

Done using last option listed.

Numbers is the only Spreadsheet program i use that lets you set the background of a single cell to an image. And they had to use the background property to do so. which just takes an existing image you give them and makes it the background. It is rather unique even that you can do that much really.

If you want to let Apple know that you would like to see this changed, please go to their feedback site and leave them a message. Here: https://www.apple.com/feedback/numbers.html

Otherwise the idea of making the table cell large than taking a screenshot is the closest thing you can get right now. there are some very good tools included in OSX for doing this. See Here for some help on that: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361

Sorry we users don't have better solutions for you,
