Audio drops randomly - killing coreaudiod is the only solution

I've had this problem through all the Mojave updates since I got my 2017 MBP in fall of 2018. I tend to work with my sound muted so autoplay videos don't annoy me when I open a tab. Randomly, the audio will refuse to turn back on - the volume icon will appear on the screen when I tap the mute button on the Touch Bar, but no sound plays. Moving the volume slider does nothing. Muting and un-muting does nothing. The only fix I've found is to go into the Activity Monitor, search for coreaudiod, and manually kill the process. I've reported this as a bug but nothing has been done.
