Try this sequence for El Capitan, and see if it works: How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

Most recent Macs can be upgraded to El Capitan, High Sierra, or to Mojave.

If you don't have a requirement for a specific release, pick the most recent of those releases that's supported by your particular Mac.

To upgrade, create a couple of external backups, check that your key apps work on the newer release, check that your printer has drivers available from the printer vendor, and then perform the upgrade.
