Window Snapping

Is MacOS ever going to integrate window snapping? Does Apple have any plans of doing so in the near future?

  1. Currently (March, 2019), a window snapping app is ranked as the #2 paid productivity app in the App Store. It is clearly a feature that users want.
  2. Windows OS has had window snapping for nearly a decade now. This isn't a new or novel idea.
  3. MacOS has a half-baked version with the use of the fullscreen button. How difficult would it be to enable split screen mode with dragging a window to the edge of the screen (instead of holding the fullscreen button)?

FWIW, there are hundreds of millions of users of Macs and very seldom do people request window snapping so it doesn't seem the ones that do are in the majority. If it's so "indispensable" there are third-party solutions such as the previously mentioned "Magnet" or "SizeUp", perhaps others. You can always post a request to Apple on the feedback page already linked.

I'm not certain I understand what you want to do, but as you position a Finder window in close proximity to another, it will align itself both horizontally and vertically. You have to move the window fairly slowly for the feature to become evident.

Some people find that feature annoying, which proves you can't please everyone. To disable it hold an option key as you drag the window.

I don't believe (3) was ever intended for that purpose.

As for (2) I don't know what Windows does.

It’s okay thanks, it was more of a suggestion than a question!

If you’re curious though, the feature I’m talking about would work on any window - not just finder. Windows snapping is a feature that Windows has had since Vista (I think). It’s the same as split view except it’s enabled by dragging a window until your cursor hits the edge of the screen, it leaves the remainder of the screen available as normal. It results in the chosen window resizing to fill half of the screen. The #2 productivity app is called Magnet and users are paying to get that feature.

Thanks, I think I understand. If you're interested though, all indications suggest Apple is moving away from windowed apps in general. Windows don't exist in iOS, and macOS has only been evolving to resemble it. Split View began as an iOS feature and you know how that works in macOS.

The Macintosh Finder has outlived every other Mac operating system feature there has ever been, but its days are numbered. Some Finder features (such as reporting disk space) conflict even with its own iOS-like Storage display, so it seems they are being abandoned already. macOS's closest thing to it is likely to be the iOS Files app.

If an app developer comes up with an equivalent to Finder so be it. It may offer various ways of visually depicting files, but won't be any more useful than Files.

If you want to see the future of macOS you can. It's called Launchpad.

Well, then I guess you're a minority since most people find this an indispensable tool. I don't see why there should or would be a legal issue, it's nonsense and a waste of time if it becomes a legal issue. A computer is a tool to do work and good tools require good maintenance and able to operate at a high level of convenience. I personally do not find it annoying and I find it really highly convenient which could increase our productivity. If you don't like the snapping feature then let's hope that Apple include the ability to enable or disable it. Apple should stop sitting on their ***** and do something about this issue. May I ask, if you don't resize your window then how do you do it since you said that you find the "snapping" feature annoying?
