Can't Open Files

I've only had a Mac for a couple weeks, and I have not had this issue before. When I try to open an excel file it starts to download like it is opening, but then I get a notice that it "can't open" the file. It doesn't say why or how to fix it. Not sure how to fix this. Any advice is appreciated.

I guess the first obvious question to ask is: Do you have an app on your hard drive which can open an Excel file, such as Microsot Excel for Mac, or maybe the Numbers app? I know that not too long ago, I was trying to download an Excel spreadsheet, I think it was, and I also received an error stating that it could not be opened. I can't remember the exact message now.
