Recommendations for Macbook usb-c

I need to purchase an adapter for the Macbook (2017). USB-C to USB. According to reviews there does not appear to be a strong contender, including the apple adapter. Any recommendations.

MacBook, macOS 10.14

I have 2 adapters for my 2016 MacBook.

One is the Apple Multiport Digital USB-C adapter (with HDMI, USB-C, and USB ports.) It's a little bit rubbish on the USB port. It no longer reliably supports one of my portable USB hard drives.

The other one, and the one I use often, is a simple Belkin USB-C to USB-A adapter. It's a short cable that plugs into the USB-C port on the MacBook and the other end has a port to plug in a standard USB cable. The Belkin adapter cable works with everything I've used: thumb drives, portable hard drives, Apple SuperDrive, etc. No issues at all with the Belkin cable.

Just got the belkin cable usb-c to usb-a but it does not file transfer from my macbook pro (2011)to my macbook (2017), only charges from the pro battery to the book battery. When connected neither desktop showed the other computer/icon. The usb-a connector is exactly the same dimension/size/configuration as a flash drive or iPhone 5 usb connector. In other words they are both "male" and in the hardware world they don't interact/connect. So what am I missing but the cable seems to be a waste of $?

Are you using Target Disk Mode (one Mac can act like an external disk drive to another Mac) on either of the MacBooks? I know there are limitations as to what sorts of connections can use this mode.

Here's an Apple Technical Article on using Target Disk Mode: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201462

Essentially, connect both MacBooks and hold the "T" key while booting the MacBook you want to behave like a disk drive.
