The screen is not responding to touch during calls. The screen doesn't lit up and I can only see the the red "hang up" button when I press the physical lock button on the right which even then doesn't respond. So I cannot hang up until the other side hangs up. What is this, how can it be fixed and why is it happening only during calls?

If you are using a case, make sure it is not interfering with the sensors at the top of the phone that detect whether the phone is being held to your ear.
If you are sure there is no interference, make an appointment with the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store to have your phone examined, as such behavior is not normal.
