Mouse is Lagging

My magic mouse is lagging when moving on either of my dual screen monitors.

The monitors are both Samsung 4k monitors, 60hz refresh rate. Both are using Thunderbolt display cables from the MacMini.

I have a 2014 Mac Mini

8GB RAM

2.6Ghz i5

It happens at least every 3-4 minutes where the mouse gets really slow and laggy.

I have tried:

  • reconnecting mouse
  • resetting PRRAM/VRAM
  • rebooting
  • removing any Bluetooth interference

Can this Mac Mini really not handle 2 4k monitors??

Mac mini, macOS 10.13

Hey, just reporting back. I purchased a $16 wireless mouse with a dongle (RF, not Bluetooth) and it works smoother than it ever has before with ZERO lags. So, either BT technology or the Magic Mouse itself is not comparable.

Thanks for your help :)

Ok that is making more sense to me now, thank you.

Here's what I did and it is helping to problem quite a bit.

In the Apple/System Preferences/Displays I unselected "Default for display" and selected "Scaled". The highest resolution there is 2560 x 1440, which I selected on both monitors. Neither of the displays seemed to changed resolution, but the mouse lag is a lot less frequent, a lot. Like I've only noticed it once, maybe twice in the past couple hours.

Yes, I have the late 2014 Mac Mini. Perhaps I did not describe it properly. It is the one shown in your link of Technical Specifications, the one with 2.6ghz.

Perhaps I should ask if it matters which video outputs I am using? Right now I am using both of the Thunderbolt 2 ports with Display Port Mini to Display Port Cables (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01J8GUH5O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Should I be using the HDMI video out put instead?

Your notes say that it support up to two displays at 2560 by 1600. I have two displays at 2560 by 1440.

My mouse is literally only 1-2 feet away from the Mac Mini, there are no other Bluetooth devices in the room (apart from my cell phone occasionally which sits on the opposite side of the desk). There are two USB plugins, 1 set of small speakers and one 4 port USB adapter which is about 10 inches long so that I don't have to plug USB devices into the back when needed.

Ok, so it took me a couple days to find a wired mouse. There is a noticeable difference. The wired mouse works when the wireless one does not. I have tried to get rid of everything else with a bluetooth connection, including the keyboard, but to no avail. I have tried new batteries, cleaning the sensors not he underside of the mouse, and reinstalling the mouse. Nothing works :(

I would rather not go with a wired mouse in the long run.

I've ordered this mouse with RF connection and will try it. (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07221FLYR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Any other suggestions in the mean time?

What did you do to accomplish "removing any Bluetooth interference"?

DId that include disconnecting all USB devices?

My link covered all the processors:

Processor

  • 1.4GHz
  • 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) with 3MB on-chip shared L3 cache
  • 2.6GHz
  • 2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz) with 3MB on-chip shared L3 cache
  • Configurable to 3.0GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz) with 4MB on-chip shared L3 cache.
  • 2.8GHz
  • 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz) with 3MB on-chip shared L3 cache
  • Configurable to 3.0GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz) with 4MB on-chip shared L3 cache.

You said you were running: "Can this Mac Mini really not handle 2 4k monitors??"

If you operate a 4K monitor at a lower resolution it is the same as operating it on another monitor at that lower resolution. A video output only care what output resolution is, not the native resolution of the monitor. Thus, you are only running 2x 2560 by 1440 outputs.

What happens when you disconnect the USB hub? Is it powered hub (powered by other than the USB port on the Mac)?

There are many sources of interference on the 2.4 GHz band used by bluetooth. See:
