An iPad is handier and easier to tote around, but it is NOT a computer which means you cannot do some tasks as easily as you could on a computer. I’d suggest you go to a store and ask lots of questions as well as playing with all of them. You need to do the research because ultimately it will be your device, so you need to have one that will work for you.
I completely agree with babowa.
You have to ask yourself, what do you what or need a computer to do for you?
If you need to use a computer for more complicated tasks that use lots multitasking, then an iPad may not be for you.
If your computer needs are more simple or modest/less intense, and you can deal with no mice or trackpad and limited mutitaskng and learnng the iOS/iPad way of working, then an iPad may work out for you.
An iPad is not a full blown, full featured computer, like a Mac.
An iPad IS a computer, but a much more simplified and limited one and will not work or perform the same as a full featured computer, like a Mac.
iPads use a much more simplified operating system and this limits and makes getting things done on an iPad differently and a little slower and in some instances, more difficult and, sometimes, more expensive to accomplish.
iPads do not natively support mice or trackpads. Only touch, stylus and keyboard.
iPads have fixed internal storage amounts. So, you need to future proof an iPad by anticipating what iPad storage model to purchase that will serve your needs for, at least, 2-3 years, or longer.
iPads do not support conventional computer peripherals, like conventional external hard drives and no support for external optical drives, like a regular, conventional computer does.
iPads only give you limited access to the OS file system.
iPads only do limited multitasking when compared to a full featured computer.
The new iPad Pros are more expensive now and really reaching into Apple Macbook territory, now.
So, it is very important that you understand that iPads and MacBooks are different and serve different needs and an iPad cannot do everything a full featured computer can.
iPads/iPad Pros are still companion, simplified mobile computing devices when compared to a full featured computer.
If you are not going to use a computer for heavy, hardware resource intensive tasks, like heavy graphic/web design and layout, complex image editing, creating complex and editing large text files/documents, CAD/Engineering/scientific programs, 3D modeling, heavy computer animation, complex video creation and editing, ANYTHING that needs heavy multitasking sessions, then an iPad Pro maybe for you.
If you plan to do any of the activities above, then an iPad/iPad Pro will be a poor choice.
The only thing Macs do not have is an interactive touch screen and are a little less “mobile” than a smaller tablet device, but some users, invariably, end up turning their iPads/iPad Pros into smaller versions of a laptop, anyways. Making this tablet/laptop distinction somewhat moot.
Best of Luck to You!
