Personal Phone and Microsoft Exchange Activesync?

Hello everyone,

firstly i I apologize if this has been asked or is in the wrong section. I mean no disrespect, I’m simply looking for information.

That said, I have my work email on my phone. It’s set up under an exchange account in my phones mail and accounts settings. It used to sync calendars, contacts, email, etc and then I realized all my new contacts within a year were gone due to being on the exchange account from my work. I learned of this and recreated contacts under my personal account, deleted off of exchange account, and turned off exchanges sync for Calendars, contacts, notes, basically everything except for mail.

Now I’ve learned that our IT company can potentially wipe our devices at request of our company.

My question is, how much do they actually have access to? Can our IT company:

  1. See my personal text messages between family and friends?
  2. See my personal pictures and videos?
  3. See my bank accounts passwords or activity?
  4. See locked notes?
  5. Web history?

I’ve also read, as an alternative you can install the outlook app itself and log into your work email there, does this protect you? Or would it be the same thing?

How about logging into the webmail app through your phone browser?

Thank you to everyone’s contribution.

That's correct. They can also enforce policies for lock timeout, required passcode length, force encrypted backups, etc.

No. They can't see any of that. They can't actually see anything on your phone.

If you set it up in the Outlook app instead of under Settings>Passwords and Accounts, their ability to wipe the device is limited to the data within the Outlook app itself. They can still set passcode, lock, and encrypted backup policies, but they can't erase the entire phone.

How about logging into the webmail app through your phone browser?

You can do that if they allow it. No policies can be pushed to your device and they can't wipe your phone or any other device that only uses web access.

Thank you to everyone’s contribution.
