MacBook Pro 2018 and Blackmagic eGPU with iMac 2011 as display possible?

Today I connect my MacBook Pro 15" 2018 to an iMac 27" 2011 through thunderbolt with an adapter (thunderbolt 3 to 2) to use the iMac as a display. Will my iMac be able to go into Target Display Mode if I put a Blackmagic eGPU between the MacBook and the iMac?

Yup, the eGPU sure won't help the iMac, but as long as the iMac is just a screen, the thunderbolt 2 should be sufficient.

Here is the reply from Blackmagic:

You can use target display mode through an eGPU if you wish to do so.

You would, as you have noted, need a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter to connect the iMac to the eGPU.

Looks like this will work then.
