MacBook pro 2015 System files too large.

So my MacBooks system files are incredibly large. I have checked time machine and saw nothing in the backups. its currently running MacOS Mojave.

Mac Os Monterey time machine back up I am new to Mac OS. My brand new Mac mini does not have any files (literally) other than some newly installed apps (word, excel etc.) However, the back up size (when trying to back up to external USB) being shown as 37 ish GB. Is this taking a snapshot of the entire system as in if system malfunctions we can restore to the back up or merely copies files (the apps, photos, documents and downloads) generated by me? If it is not backing up system files where are these MB’s coming from?? Also when I attach thenUSB it shows Ex FAT file format. Do I have to convert to APFS or time machine will do this automatically?

System files taking up too much space on my HD. I got a prompt saying that I was running low on HD space. For my surprise I found out that the system files are taking up most of my HD space. I use the computer for home, so I don't run any heavy software, just the usual, MS Office, iTunes, Chrome, etc. This is a new Mac and on my previous machines I don't remember that the system files would take the majority of the HD. Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today. It sounds like you are concerned with how much storage is being taken up on your Mac.

You can free up storage space. Have a look at this article: How to free up storage space on your Mac.

Also check out: See used and available storage space on your Mac. "System: Contains macOS system applications and files. Examples include Mail, Terminal, Calculator, and Time Machine Local Snapshots."
