I have specific text tones assigned to each family member. Now that I have my Apple Watch I can't get the text tones to sound on my phone. Want phone to get text sound and and read it on my watch.

I was referring to Wrist Detection. With that turned off, as a workaround, you would get notifications on the phone, but I'm not sure about the Watch. It is not the ideal thing, it is not a feature, however a workaround, to allow people to get notifications on the phone, but I don't believe the watch. Like we have said, exactly what you are looking for is currently not a feature. You wish to get notifications on both devices, but want to choose what type you get (sound versus haptic), and by turning off notifications for text on the watch, you are getting them on the phone, but not the watch. If you want a notification on the watch, you are going to have to leave it turned on, but you won't get anything on the phone. I understand why you are trying to do it, so you can hear the custom text tone. But, it isn't a feature. For the most part if am ok with these answers. I still don't know how to get my watch to vibrate and have my text tone come on my phone only. If I turn off the notifications on the watch like I learned how to do it is harder for me to read my text on my watch. I have to do a few extra steps. I can't just twist my wrist and see the text on the watch. I have to click on messages.

You really can't do what you want.

What julieda has provided you is correct. How you receive notification on the phone and watch are dependent on what you are doing. If the iPhone is locked you will receive notifications on the Watch. If the phone is unlocked, you will receive notifications on the iPhone. The only way to receive notifications on both devices is to workaround and disable security settings on the Watch. My answer was redundant. I posted the same thing (but not as well written) as Chris. When I realized that, I removed it. Apologies for the confusion.

I'm sorry, I'm not exactly sure what you meant by turning off the text by sliding and hitting the ... If you set Text notifications to Off on the Watch app, then there will not be any notification on the Watch, since you turned it off.

If I'm misunderstanding you, please explain what you did for getting the tone on your phone and not the watch.

That is because you turned Notifications off for the Watch. It would be just like wanting to see a particular thing on the phone, you have to open that app. As Idris stated, is isn't going to work like you wish.

As far as going to the Apple Store, if they are able to provide you with a way to do what you want, without turning off Wrist Detection, please come back and let us know. Others may like the change. I just know that it cannot be done like you wish.

Chris, I've disabled security settings on the watch, so it no longer needs a pin code. I'm still struggling to get notifications on both devices to make sound/vibrate.

Could you elaborate on how to get notifications sounds/vibration on phone and watch after disabling security settings on the watch?

I don't believe you can set custom ringtones for the watch.
