Dashboard issue!

First off I'm a new Apple user. Not sure what I did to cause it as it didn't do this when I first got the MacBook. It's a 2009 model with 4 gig of ram and a 2.13 GigHz Duo processor updated to El Capitan Version 10.11.6. When I open Dashboard after 3 to 5 seconds it opens whichever browser is set as default. Unit came with Safari and I added Google Crome Browser. It hits a couple of pages but lands on One-drive. After installing Chrome it didn't do this at first. I'm just not sure where I erred!

I found answer to open finder and hold down Option Key, select Go, then Library, then Preferences and delete the apple.dashboard.plist file. I've done this and eventually the file gets re-created. My problem is this doesn't fix the browser issue as suggested. Hoping someone has a solution.

Thanks,

Jack

I started removing widgets first the weather app, then there were two folders that appeared to be audio files. After removing those three, dashboard started working fine. Thanks for your help. You got me to rethink things.
