Mojave, Pages, and "filter failed" printing error

Everything is updated: my MacBook Pro, the Brother HL-4070CDW printer, Pages.

I have "reset the printer" thingie in System Preferences — repeatedly.

Pages simply cannot print any kind of layout. The old Pages 09 could (as well as a host of other things that the new Pages can't).

I'm not looking for a solution, because there's not one. Apple has screwed the pooch on this one, and as someone else said on another similar post, no, it's not Brother's problem. Brother's printer — and everyone else's printer, as evidenced by all the other posts — worked fine until Apple made an inexplicable change to its software.

Further thoughts on why it's Apple's problem and not Brother's: the exact same document when exported to PDF from Pages will print. The same document laid out in Pixelmator Pro will print. It's Pages, not the printer.

Fix this, Apple.

You have a Provide Pages Feedback menu item in the Pages application menu. Use it. Due to the volume of these submissions, Apple is unlikely to respond to you. You cannot prove that Pages '09 v4.3 can print to your current driver implementation for that Brother laser as that Apple software is dead on Mojave.

No one here can fix any application-specific programming issue as we are just fellow users. Apple product teams neither read these posts, nor participate here as it is an open, Google archived site.

The release of macOS 10.14.4 is not too distant, and it is also about that time of the year when we might expect another update to Pages (if past is prologue). Either of these updates may or may not fix issues with that Brother laser.

I also observed that for the U.S. market, the last printer driver update for the HL-4070CDW was in Sept. 2016 and even brother only indicates support for High Sierra. So, they do not officially support it on Mojave, and with drivers that are 2.5 years old, and have not been updated for Mojave, you are not assured that this printer will work correctly in Mojave. It might be Pages, but it could be incompatibility at a deeper level that is materializing in Pages.

You probably have already Reset your Print System, but if you have not, I would encourage it to see if it makes a difference with Pages.
