Two different IMEI numbers on the same iPhone?

I bought a brand new iPhone XS Max from a reputable retailer (John Lewis).

The IMEI number in Settings > General is DIFFERENT to the IMEI number when I dial *#06#.

Why is this?

in fact there are THREE different IMEI numbers on this phone:

Primary IMEI (under settings)
Digital SIM IMEI (under settings)
*#06#

in all three cases only the last six numbers are different, the first 8 are the same.

Why? I need to put down an imei for insurance but don’t know which to use

Your iPhone is capable of using more than one SIM. Each SIM has an IMEI.

For insurance purposes, I would suggest using the iPhone’s serial number. (Settings > General > About > Serial Number). There is only one serial number per iPhone.

Go to Settings/General/About. Scroll down to the bottom. You will see "Primary" and an IMEI under it. Then Digital SIM and a second, different IMEI. The first one under Primary is the one that should be associated with your serial number. It should be the same as the one for *#06#.

I used that number and the insurance company said it’s the wrong IMEI. I’m worried that I’ve been scammed and I have a fake iPhone? How is the *#06# number different to the number under settings?
