I received a phone call supposedly from Apple support. I didn't talk to anyone but I'm wondering if it was a scam or not because the number shown on my caller ID is the number for Applecare in the US.

Hello:

Just received a call supposedly from Applecare. I suspected a scam so I didn't take the call but when I checked the number on my caller ID, it is the Applecare 800 number for the US.

The message said my system had been breached. How would I know this?

The calls are scams from criminals trying to steal your personal and financial information. They use number spoofing to pretend to be calling from an Apple number.
