I'm exporting a 15 minute 1080HD movie from FCPX using "Apple Devices" which is my usual for movies I intend to put in iTunes or upload to Youtube. In this case, the movie file is 1.12 GB, which seems unusually large for a 15 minute movie. Anyone have any suggestions for a better output choice for good quality enough quality for my use, but smaller file size?
It does not seem too big a file.
You can make a smaller file by exporting to 720p.
You can use Compressor to export a 1080p and have greater control over bitrate.
With greater compression to achieve a smaller file size, quality may suffer. You will have to judge if the results are satisfactory.

Can you tell us what were the export settings in FCP X, in each case? Master File, Apple Devices, or...? Faster encode or Better Quality? All of these settings can make a difference.
Can you post screenshots of the export window?
In both cases, just used the share item for Apple devices. Tried faster or better and the file size is the same either way. Tried exporting through Compressor and that gave a smaller file size at about 750mb, which made more sense. In that case, again, used the export for Apple Devices and did not change a thing.
Hey, so I just output at 720p and lo and behold, the file size is bigger, not smaller! Wha....??? What the heck am I doing wrong?
And then I used the 1080 version to convert it to 720 using Handbrake and it created a file size which I expected. How is that?
Well, if that's a pretty normal file size, then okay. I just thought it seemed too large, but maybe I'm thinking of a 720p file. Thanks.
Handbrake uses a much lower base rate I’m guessing.
Any idea why the outputs from FCPX directly makes no sense in terms of file size?
I just tried exporting a movie to Apple Devices at 720p, with Faster Encode and with Better Quality and the latter was almost double the size. YMMV, of course, as it all depends on many things.
