I've tried going to the "Notifications" section in System Preferences, but CNN does not appear in the left panel. Nor does New York Times, notifications from which I also want to turn off. Thanks so much.

I just found how to disable notifications in Chrome:
Yes I know you see the notifications on the right of your desktop, but you have to enable them in your browser. I can’t explain it how to do this in Chrome because I don’t use it. I described how to do it in Safari, I suppose their will be a similar way to do it in Chrome
Thanks so much for your help. You were right first time; I had to go into Safari to block the notifications in Notifications Center, even though I don't use Safari. Appreciate your help! Best wishes.
To be clear these notifications don't come up in Safari (I use Chrome), they come up in the Notifications Center on the right of my desktop.
