Mac Pro 4,1 (5,1) Bluetooth upgrade questions

I have an 8 core Mac Pro 4,1 (flashed to 5,1) from early 2009 which did not come with wifi. The original Bluetooth was always very spotty, so I always used a dongle. This generally worked OK but lately, perhaps due to OS upgrades, I found myself losing connections frequently. I invested in a combo mini PCIe card from osxwifi.com which has latest wifi and bluetooth and is compatible with all features of High Sierra (my present OS) and Mojave. The installation instructions called for disconnecting the USB cable from the old Bluetooth module and then connecting it to an extension USB cable that came with the dual card. I did so, and also removed the old Bluetooth card. I found that the Bluetooth dongle I had been using stopped working once the old Bluetooth card and been disconnected from USB, but I did not notice if the Bluetooth preference was present in System Prefs. Now, after removing the old card, I can confirm that there is no Bluetooth preference and menu bar says "Bluetooth unavailable." The new dual card has been connected to the USB connector that was removed from the old Bluetooth card and wifi works, but the system is not seeing any Bluetooth. Could it be that the old Bluetooth card is needed for the system to see any Bluetooth? In other words, is the USB connection to the original Bluetooth card the only logical connection to the system, or was there some other communication between the system board and the original Bluetooth module? The reason I ask is that I am wondering if replacing the old, original BT card with a used module might restore the Bluetooth system preference and enable the system to see the new Bluetooth on the dual card.

I don't believe there is any issue over the order of WiFi connections, obviously you should not connect the Bluetooth to a WiFi connection or vice versa. The antenna connections are just push fit, not screw.

Yes it is sounding at the moment like the USB connection. (Note to others, it is not a standard USB connector, just a small 4-wire connector.)

Since the new card does both WiFi and Bluetooth it would have to be the chip rather than the card and I would think this less likely.

It is worth trying to reset both the Mac Pro PRAM and the SMC.

What card was previously installed?

I purchased a n used 4.1 ( flashed to 5.1) that did not have a wifi/BT card and I purchased one from OWC and it worked. However, when I updated to Mojave BT stopped working since the BT on that card is not supported by Mojave..

The OWC card was an original Apple card and did not have any USB connection. All I had to do was to insert the card, screw in the small retaining screw and attach the antenna leads.

The osxwifi.com card requires a USB connection for power

I have a MacPro5,1 which originally had the standard Apple WiFi and Bluetooth cards. I replaced these with a newer combined WiFi/Bluetooth card like the OSXWiFi one although mine came from a different source.

With regards to these types of upgrades a MacPro4,1 and MacPro5,1 can be considered identical.

The only issue I had was initially with the very fiddly antenna connections. The original WiFi card only used two antenna leads, the newer card (like yours) uses three WiFi antenna leads and the Mac Pro had a spare antenna lead already available inside. The new card needed to use an extension cable to allow connecting the Bluetooth antenna. This means the new card ends up with four antenna leads attached to it.

Apart from the hassle of attaching the Bluetooth antenna extension lead, one of the WiFi leads popped loose in my case and resulted in the WiFi appearing and disappearing. Once I took it apart and re-attached it successfully it has since been reliable for both WiFi and Bluetooth.

Not having bought a kit from OSXWiFi I don't know what instructions they provide but another company which in the past has sold a virtually identical kit is MacVidCards and their instructions are here - http://www.macvidcards.com/wifi-and-bluetooth-card-installation-in-a-41-or-51.html I used these instructions when fitting my kit.

Thanks for sharing. I have four antennae connected to the combo card. Three are the ones which were pre-installed and are connected to wifi card. Wifi is working. The Bluetooth external antenna kit is hooked up to the card properly but there is no bluetooth available- it's just not visible. I'm thinking maybe bad usb cable, or BT card. BTW, I'm guessing which built in wifi antennae get connected to which gold connectors on the wifi card is not critical? Does one just pull off those gold connectors, which look like little female snaps, or are they threaded?
