Importing old iMovie projects into iMovie 10.1.8

I am actually trying to get these old projects created on Maverick into FCP. But it seems that they first have to be converted into a newer iMovie program. But the only file format which is recognised is QuickTime Movie. It will not accept Disk images or anything else. What am I doing wrong?

Using macOS Sierra 10.12.6

iMac Pro

Mp4 is pretty universal, so if that is what is working in FCP, I would stick

with that.

Here's a link that lists the formats supported by FCP"

As you can see from the above link, Mp4 is one of the container formats

supported.

If you still have iMovie 6 on your computer you can share out your projects as movies, and import those into Final Cut Pro. Or, you can control-click on the iMovie 6 project's icon and select and click on Show Package Contents. You then will see a screen something like this:

The media for the project will be in the Media folder. You can Option-drag (copy, not move) the media to your desktop and from there import into iMovie 10 or Final Cut Pro.

Also, if by chance you have iMovie 8 or 9 on your computer I believe that you can update your iMovie 6 projects into it, and from there update the projects and events into iMovie 10. I have read this but not tried it myself.

Thanks for your interest, Rich. It must have been iMovie 6 because I never converted to the ghastly iMovie 8. I was eventually able to upload the old iMovie direct to FCP without the intervening conversion to the later iMovie program. At first it was just the media files, which came through apparently intact but in a terrible jumble. Then, fortunately I discovered that I also had mp4 files and these have uploaded successfully.

So I am happy now but still confused. What is the recommended format to transfer iMovie to FCP? I would be grateful for your advice.

Regards,

Chuck
