Activating free apple music trial

We bought a new iPhone and given a six month free trial of Apple music through ourcarrier Telstra. I have activated the offer with Telstra and I already have an iTunes account but I can’t figure out how to activate it with Apple. Telstra just says it’s active you need to speak to Apple support. Apple just say it’s not active. I searched for linking account on Apple and under that topic just says sign in to your account and then there is no further instruction. I feel like there’s some step that hasn’t been included? Any ideas appreciated

Do not subscribe to Apple Music through Apple, if you already have that service through your mobile provider. If you would do that, then you would end up with two subscriptions.

About bundling Apple Music through mobile phone service providers - Apple Support

You will need to link your mobile subscription to your Apple ID, as described:

How to link your Apple ID and mobile number
1. Open the Music app, then tap For You.
2. When asked to confirm your Apple ID, tap Continue to log in with the Apple ID displayed on the screen. If you want to link a different Apple ID, tap "Want to use a different Apple ID?" and sign in.
You can also go to https://applemusic.com/carrier on your mobile device to verify your subscription and link your Apple ID.

Thanks for your help. Finally sorted now. Turns out the free trial was assigned to my wife's account and not mine. I'm the only one that plays with all this stuff, phone in my name, account in my name etc but when opening the music up it would always open with my account and only prompt was for password. There was no prompt "want to use a different account". If I saw that I would have tried hers. Anyway, went in to settings on the ipad, in to Music app, and there I was able to sign out then signed in with her credentials and suddenly all working. Now I'm actually trying this Apple Music thing it's not a patch on Pandora. Unfortunately Pandora in Australia is no more. Will try Spotify after this. Thanks again community
