Mini DisplayPort to HDMI how to get sound to TV?

Hi, I have an early 2009 Mac Pro with a ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 MB. I want to connect it to a new TV that has HDMI. It's my understanding that early MiniDisplay ports don't carry audio. Is it possible to get audio through the TV's Speakers? Thanks

I think you should be successful with one of the newer adapters as suggested by Malcolm as you have an original video card. However if you had a newer video card e.g. an AMD Radeon HD 7950 - even the Mac edition then Apple have deliberately disabled audio over Displayport and HDMI from these newer video cards in Sierra and later. With Mojave they have even gone to further effort to disable a previous user derived workaround. :(
