Macbook Pro Retina Early 2013 Broken Hinge

6-year-old MBP Retina (Early 2013)

A few months ago the hinge suddenly became stiff for no apparent reason. I lived with it and didn't look into fixing it. However, this week while the computer was sitting on my desk I heard a crack sound and found it came from the hinge. Something inside it broke and now the lid / display assembly is disconnected on one side of the hinge from the bottom piece of the laptop. And the lid is loose and doesn't close just with the rest of the laptop. I've always treated the laptop very carefully -- never dropped.

I've been told that the only way to fix this is have a whole new display assembly installed as the hinge cannot be fixed on its own. Apple said they charge $680 for the repair, and UfixIBreak said $550 + tax. Buying and replacing a display assembly on my own would be a bit cheaper than UfixIBreak. I'm thinking: 1) whether there really isn't a way to fix the hinge on its own, and 2) whether it's worth repairing this 6-year-old product which is 1 year away from being labeled obsolete by Apple (In California. Thx consumer protection laws). Not looking forward to buying a new 2018 MBP + a slew of dongles. Thank you for any advice!!

Unfortunately it is not possible to replace the hinge on the Retina models.

Some 15" MBPro (2013) models have GPU issues so keep this in mind. Apple had a special repair program which has since expired for the 2013's. I'm not sure how common this issue is for the 2013 model.

If you decide to replace the Display yourself, then be very careful connecting the display cable to the Logic Board. It is very fragile and easy to damage the delicate cable end pins if it is not perfectly aligned with the Logic Board connector. There is no way to replace just the cable.
