Mac 10.14.3 behaving very oddly - slow, some apps don't work, passes all of Apple's diagnostics

This is hard to describe, so apologies in advance. I thought I'd post to see if there were some ideas before taking my Mac Mojave 10.14.3 Retina 5k, 27", 24GB memory system into the local Apple shop. All of a sudden the system has changed its behavior from a fairly fast and responsive one to a system with erratic response times and behaviors. For example, some apps are extremely slow to startup (ccleaner) and the app icon bounces for a minute before the app fires up (not unique to ccleaner - other apps are doing this as well). I can't delete applications - for example, with launchpad up, I cannot get the black 'X' to appear to delete any app. The app icon vibrates but there isn't a 'X'. Nor does the app show up in the Applications folder. While CCcleaner finds my critical apps (like Lightroom) it doesn't find many other apps to enable me to delete (but the apps show up in Launchpad and are able to be launched). CleanGenius app hangs while looking for apps (in the Uninstall option). DriveDX gets 90% through it's short self-test and then hangs (over an hour). However 2 out of 3 of their system status reports give a 100% thumbs up. One report says drive failure pending. I'm not sure of the trustworthiness of the data they provide after seeing the discrepancies. Avast (which has been running in background as I thought the issue might be a virus, is about a third the way through a scan (1M files) and I can see the number of files being scanned steadily increasing and the names changing, but the progress bar is pegged at 16% and hasn't changed in 12 hours.

I've run the Apple system health check ( D key on startup), Disk Utility (R key) and all report no issues. I've reinstalled the OS as well (all of the above events were done after a new OS install). In the System Report (Apple icon upper right, under About) , under Software -> Applications it says "The plug-in did not respond quickly enough while gathering the information'. After a couple of days of bouncing around trying different utilities, I don't feel I've made much progress. My system is 'useable' but something's broken.

Uninstall Avast as per the developer's instructions. No Anti-Virus software or so-called “cleaning” apps are needed or recommended for Mac OS. They can conflict with Mac's own built-in security. At best they will slow your Mac by using unnecessary resources and at worst will bork your entire system. And Avast is one of the worst.

You just installed something called CleanGenius - is that a suposed "cleaning" app? (And, it crashed).Uninstall according to the developer's instructions. Note: some apps cannot simply be dragged to the trash when trying to uninstall - you need to follow their uninstall instructions precisely.

Also, the report notes that you are running out of RAM - after uninstalling Avast and CleanGenius completely, restart the Mac and then run the etrecheck again. Use the third icon from the right in the little toolbar to post the entire report all at once. Also, you may want to check Activity Monitor (in your Applications > Utilities) to see what is using all of your RAM. Are you using Chrome?

Major Issues: None

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems or opportunities for improvement.

Heavy RAM usage - This machine is using a large amount of RAM.

Out of RAM - This machine is running short on RAM and has a mechanical hard drive, reducing the speed of the virtual memory system.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

Sorry, I didn't respond earlier, but here's my take on the latest report you have provided:

  1. If you don't need to use TeamViewer, I recommend uninstalling it.
  2. Be sure to empty the Trash as the CleanGenius app is still in there.
  3. The write speed to your system drive is exceptionally slow compared to the read speed. A potential for a failing drive?
  4. Remove Google Chrome. If you prefer the Chrome web browser's interface, I suggest that you try Opera as it's built on the same Chromium engine as Google Chrome.
  5. Remove the items listed in the Clean up section of the report.

Clean Genius is still listed in the login items - you should remove it there as well as in the trash can.

Chrome is using a lot of RAM (compared to others). Chrome is a resource hog on Macs.

As for Activity Monitor, I was also referring to processes using a large percentage of your CPU hoping to see something that could explain the slowdowns.

Mar 18, 2019 1:13 PM in response to Tesserax

I will keep teamviewer and Chrome for now. I emptied trash.

Reran etracheck (33 minutes with nothing else running of significance on the system) and this time it is suggesting an impending failure of the drive as Babowa was suspecting. However, I don't see the supporting data why etracheck came to this conclusion. On this run the write speed was 282MB/s and the read 614 MB/s. If you see it please let me know.

I guess that the answer is pretty apparent at this point in that I need to replace the drive. It's about 5 years old. Also I don't want to wait until a system crash which would most likely happen at the worst time. Do you agree with disk drive replacement at this point? Also, if you happen to know, can one get a larger drive than the 3TB standard from Apple? I've not been able to find any reliable data on that matter.

Thanks!

Mar 18, 2019 7:46 PM in response to gmarcos

well, I never start using any hard drive without formatting it myself first. It is really easy and I do it before installing it: put it into an external temporary enclosure (OWC has them), plug that in, launch Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities), choose the drive and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and GUID partition table. Then simply hit erase. All Done. This process gets rid of any superfluous software that might have been included as well. Having said all that, I have not bought one that was "softraid certified" so I would not know if there is any difference.

Mar 19, 2019 9:55 AM in response to gmarcos

I assume I can use TimeMachine to restore my system. I haven't found any good instructions on that as of yet.

You can, and in this case, you would use Apple's Migration Assistant to restore your Mac from the Time Machine backups.

Ref: How to move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

Carbon Copy Cloner looks interesting, but I don't have an extra drive available on which to install. Since I have 2 time machine backups as mentioned, would you recommend using one of them for the Carbon Copy Cloner? I don't have experience in understanding the differences between installing/rebuilding my system from CCC vs Timemachine and whether the $40 for CCC is worth it.

First, let me try to explain why I think you will appreciate using CCC. Let's look at the two basic methods to get a replacement drive "up and running:"

  • Method #1 - Using Time Machine:
    • Remove & replace the existing HDD with the replacement drive.
    • Install macOS using Recovery Mode.
    • Install your data from a Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant
  • Method #2 - Using CCC
    • Use CCC to make a bootable clone of your existing system drive. Test the clone to be sure that your Mac can boot up to the macOS Desktop.
    • Remove & replace the existing HDD with the (now bootable) replacement drive.
    • Done

With this second method, you now have a "backup" of your system drive as it was your system drive. You can then decide to use it for other purposes.

FWIW. OWC provides a drive replacement "kit." It includes an external USB drive caddy that you would place the replacement drive inside to make the CCC clone. After swapping drives, your original drive can be inserted into this caddy, and again, used as a portable external drive.
