Exclude mac photos from iCloud syncing

I like the idea of being able to view photos taken with my iPhone on my iMac and having the edits (and deletes) syncing between them. But, I have a lot of older photos on my iMac that I don't need or want synced with iCloud (and probably don't have the space without upgrading). Is there a way to turn on iCloud syncing but exclude some of the photos on my iMac from syncing? Thanks!

The easiest way to do this is to use two separate photo libraries on your Mac, one small library with your favorite photos to sync with iCloud and your other devices, and a separate archive library with your other photos, that you not want on your other devices. Only one library at a time can be your system photo library and be enabled for iCloud on your Mac.
