I'm trying to encrypt an sd card on my iMac 27 running the latest Majave. There is no option to "erase encrypted" in Disk Utility and no option to "encrypt" in Finder. I can decrypt in finder if a card is already encrypted - but not encrypt a new card. Cards are correctly formatted in mac OS extended journaled.

Make sure "View" in Disk Utility is set to "Show All Devices" and the partition map is set to "GUID".

Just tried again with an encrypted USB drive. All options available (in both Finder and Disk Utility) tried with non-encrypted USB drive and encryption not possible. Partition is greyed out in Disk Utility. So works ok for drives that are already encrypted but will not encrypt a new drive.

You're welcome. Select the top level of the card and click "Erase" to see the parttition map. Don't erase it of course. Just hit cancel.

Thanks. Utility is set to show all disks and disk is visible. There is no option to "partition" and no obvious way to check partition map.
