I have Apple TV with the silver remote. It turns on and everything looks fine the light on the box flashes when I press the buttons on the remote but nothing happens it just stays on the home screen. I did all the shortcuts, holding done the menu button and down, menu and left/right and changing the battery bit nothing seems to work. How do I fix this?

Try a restore to factory settings. That should bring it back if the misbehavior is in software.

Unlink and then link again as described in the support document. That solved similar issues for others. Unlinking doesn’t have to be done with the previous remote (in case of replacement).
If the status light flashes when using the remote, then the Apple TV is receiving its signal. It will only listen to the linked remote though, not other signals that it may receive.
If you can’t restore through the menu, then you may be able to restore through iTunes.
I tried to do the unlink and link but this did not work I still can’t do anything but the light on the box is still flashing when I press the buttons on the remote, anything else I can do?
