Does PHOTOS allow me to import and manipulate RAW photos from Nikon, Canon and Sony cameras?

Does PHOTOS allow you to import and manipulate RAW photos from Nikon, Canon and Sony cameras? As Aperture did? I'm hearing that Photos won't support Canon CR3 RAW files. I was getting ready to migrate all my Aperture libraries to Photos, but need to be sure I can download more RAW images to the libraries as I shoot them. Especially if I change to new cameras.

This will depend on the version of MacOS X you have installed and the model of your camera.

Photos is part of the system, and Photos uses the RAW support that comes with Mac OS X.

The RAW support is specific for each camera model, not just for the brand of the camera, just like in Aperture.

Some Canon CR3 files for some Sony cameras are supported on macOS 10.14 Mojave but not yet all. The current list for Mojave is here:

I am seeing "Canon EOS R" on the list, but not "Canon EOS RP". It may take a while, until a new camera will get RAW support from Apple. It will usually be released, when new system updates are released.

If you look again at the list, you will see EOS R between the Canon EOS M6

and the Canon EOS Rebel SL1

....

  • Canon EOS M50
  • Canon EOS M6
  • Canon EOS R
  • Canon EOS Rebel SL1
  • Canon EOS Rebel SL2
  • Canon EOS Rebel T100

Do you have macOS 10.14 Mojave installed? Then you can check the RAW support you are currently having installed by going to the -menu. Hold down the options key ⌥ while clicking the  and select "System report". In the System Report panel click "Software" in the sidebar, then click "Raw support and scroll through the installed support.

That is a big help, thanks! I'm in the middle of trying to migrate over to a 2018 MacBook Pro with Mohave, and thought I should move the Aperture libraries in my old MacBook Pro over to Photos before doing that. Your list shows that all my existing images, shot in Nikon Raw with D70, D300s and Nikon 1 V3 cameras, will all be supported. But I was about to buy a new Canon EOS R or EOS RP mirrorless camera and found a review that said, "Wish I hadn't bought this camera, it isn't compatible with my MacBook Pro." Indeed, the year-old EOS R and two-month-old EOS RP are not shown on the list you provided, so that must mean that they aren't supported in Apple RAW. These are full frame cameras only a bit bigger than my V3 Nikon, which is small indeed. But the Nikon has a 1" sensor I find a bit small for quality images. But I guess this means I can't buy either Canon, at least not until support is added to Apple's RAW support that will allow me to store and manipulate them in Photos.

Does PHOTOS allow me to import and manipulate RAW photos from Nikon, Canon and Sony cameras?
