I used numbers to open a large excel file - it opened but included only about 1,000 rows whereas the file had about twice that many. I cannot find an option that would let me increase the rows included.

Adding to what SGIII suggests, you might try opening the Excel file in Libre Office. Based on OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice is capable of handling larger files than Numbers, and more closely resembles Excel. The Copy/Paste approach recommended by SG will also serve to transfer data from an Excel file to a Numbers document.

Numbers, unlike Excel, is not designed for large datasets (Excel can handle hundreds of thousands of rows). However, it should have no problem importing several thousand rows. Perhaps there is something in particular about your document that Numbers is having trouble handling. Is your document, for example, very "wide", with dozens of columns?
If you still have trouble opening an Excel document then if you have access to Excel you could try is selecting the cells in Excel, typing command-c to copy, clicking in Numbers, and typing command-v to paste.

Thanks for the suggestions. It seems that the issue was one (or more) cells that overflowed and when I corrected that the file copied without incident.
