iOS Calendar Only Shows Events for 1 month

I use Calendar on my Macbook Pro and and iPhone 6s. Most events get initially entered on the Mac. The phone syncs all recent events correctly -- but go back more than a month and there's nothing there. I see only holidays and events that repeat automatically.

Both devices are signed into iCloud and both have Calendars selected for iCloud sync.

The Mac is running 10.12.6. The phone is running 12.1.4

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
