Macbook Pro "Spazzing Out" Lately...

Hi,

Long time Apple user, but first time posting here. Anyways...

Just recently my MBP has gotten much slower in just about every category: opening apps, closing apps, navigating in finder, beachballing, crashing multiple times a day, and more.

I haven't had any issues until the last 3-4 weeks. I have installed a few apps, and maybe they are the problem. But I really do not think they are. Private Internet Access, AppCleaner, and EtreCheckPro were all downloaded within the last three weeks, from their main websites.

Anyways, I ran EtreCheck and wanted to copy/paste/post it here and get some feedback. But I did not know if we are supposed to do that in our initial post (this one) or maybe first try some other things?

Here is some info about my device:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)

Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB

This laptop is my baby. It has always ran so smooth and I just absolutely love it. But I am thinking about doing a full reset.... maybe I just have too many apps installed?

Also, what is your guys opinion on Google Chrome? I know it hogs resources, but there is a pretty neat extension that allows you to force all tabs to "go to sleep/suspend." It's called "The Great Suspender." I don't know how much memory this actually frees up, if any at all. But it does have good reviews.

Anyways, I guess that is what I will start with. I really appreciate any help in advance, and again, I did just run the EtreCheck scan (free one), and it did show a few unsigned files, but there was nothing under "Major Issues" which i guess is a good sign? idk.

Should I just post the etrecheck data below? Thanks again! PS please don't tell me she is just getting old :(

Edit: It (EtreCheck) says that I am using MalwareBytes as my AV, but I am not. I initially installed it, but uninstalled a while ago. I currently do not use any AV if that matters at all. I think it is just the .pkg file it found and assumed.

Storage is low but not critical with 35% free. .

The rule of thumb to keep SSDs at top speeds is to never completely fill them up. To avoid performance issues, you should never use more than 70% of its total capacity.

You can always boot of an external boot clone, this would bypass your internal PCIe SSD to rule out SSD hardware problems

Nothing jumps out of the report.

I would very your VPN software is up to date.

I see you have a couple app crashes (?)

2019-03-22 00:27:47 WindowServer Crash

2019-03-19 18:16:07 Popcorn-Time.app Crash

—So no mention of Kernel Panic Reports

—You can always Boot into Recovery (Command R) and from the dropdown menu: Utilities>  Disk Utility> run the First Aid on your Macintosh HD. If errors are found and repaired, run again until no errors reported.

Recovery  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

—You can always  Try a SafeBoot  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-10 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches, dynamic loader cache,  etc.  get cleared and rebuilt. You can log in and test in this environment, extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204443

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

Google Chrome? I know it hogs resources

Welcome to the apple support communities CygwinX !

Mac does a good job managing RAM, even with a resource hog like Chrome. Unused RAM is wasted RAM.

First question is how much free storage space on the SSD ?

from the ~/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app copy and paste:

 df -H

You can post the Etrcheck report in its entirety in the tool bar—Additional txt box:

Perfect this is exactly what I was looking for.

Yes the crashing is actually the most annoying part. It just freezes for 3-5 seconds and then I am at the login screen. Happens a lot with PopcornTime (which I usually chalked up to the fact that it's PopcornTime).

What a relief to hear that nothing sticks out. And I am definitely going to try at least the first 2 suggestions, and maybe create another account and see how she behaves.

Thank you so much!!!! have a great day.

Like the finer.app crashes and logs me out) every 20 minutes.

I find the above a curious statement— are you being logged out, such you simply log back in?

20 minutes like clock work?

I saw no mention of a Finder crash or a Kernel Panic in the report.

From the Finder>Go>Go To Folder, copy and paste:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

The panic report should have "panic" in the file name.

If you do have kernel panics, post 3 of them if available, each their own Additional Txt Box for easy of reading.

Worth a look at >System Preferences>Security & Privacy>General unlock the pad lock and verify both

General preference is not set to Require password

and Advanced preferences is not set to automatic log out

Your report is full of the active pieces of MalwareBytes, it appear to still be running. That is nothing to worry about, as that is the least obtrusive third-party anti-malware available, because it does not scan your files non-stop, looking for patterns that might be problem (they are not).

You are running Chrome, candidate for biggest resource-hog on the planet. You should take another look at Firefox or Safari, which have gotten more recent updates and are now faster and more efficient than Chrome.

You are appear to be syncing files to the Internet with MegaSync. If you insist on syncing files to the web, and do not use Apple software to do it, your Mac will literally spend all day deciding which files need to be updated. (It has to check the date&time on every file on every drive, and keep doing that as long as your Mac is awake.) This is a tremendous waste of resources, and the web is not good place to store stuff to begin with, except to share your pictures and things like that. Your report show excessive use of Internet-related items that are not just attributable to web surfing.

Your Time Machine drive appear to be formatted as a Case Sensitive Volume, which means that your Backup drive COULD contain files that would collide with the same names, different case, on your Mac when doing a Restore. This is generally frowned upon. If you have the chance to reformat, you may wish to choose case insensitive the next time.

Your drive has accumulated at least one Time Machine local snapshot. This can make its drive slow down. When the space is needed, these snapshots will be dumped, but why collect them? Connect your drive at least every-other day to maintain good speed.

None of your diagnostic reports appears life-threatening.
